SP was started by an unlikely alliance of environmental, business, academic and policy leaders who believe that Canada can become a global leader in building a competitive, environmentally sustainable economy through policies that make markets work for the environment. The Sustainable Prosperity Research-Policy Network The SP Network focuses on producing innovative policy ideas for linking the environment and the economy. It aims to develop a new generation of market-based environmental policy approaches for Canada through quality, accessible research and outreach. The SP Network seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice; it brings together prominent academics from a range of disciplines and countries with leaders from business, government and civil society. The network engages academics and professionals from the fields of economics, public policy, law, science, business and the environment to study a range of market-based policy options to address problems such as climate change, water pollution, smog, and forest conservation. The SP Network's first report, on reforming the fuel tax to address climate change and clean air, has already garnered significant attention. The network has received a seven year grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada to support its operations, building on commitments from the University of Ottawa and numerous other sources. Research Director Job Description: As a key member of the SP team, the Research Director will lead the organization's research initiatives and manage the academic research network. The Research Director will work collaboratively with other SP associates, steering committee and staff to identify policy-relevant research priorities, generate the research and reports, and direct their dissemination. The Research Director will also be responsible for: fostering strong links between academics and research users; managing research competitions; and promoting SP concepts across academic and policy communities in Canada. S/he will be expected to establish new links with external partners, and build upon existing relationships in order to establish SP as a leading centre of policy-relevant, evidence based research on the environment and economy. The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes: * An advanced degree in Environmental Economics, Policy, Law, Business, or other relevant field; * Relevant work experience managing research projects and developing partnerships; * Significant research and writing experience in the environment-economy field * Working knowledge of the academic environment, preferably in Canada; * Excellent interpersonal, communications, research and writing skills; * Strong planning, organizational and coordination skills; * Ability to provide specialized advice and guidance to clients and external partners; * Bilingualism is an asset, as is knowledge of key donor agencies and granting councils.
